Principal Kaniesha Pettaway

Welcome to Summit Middle School! We are located at 9500 Windsor Parkway in Johnston, Iowa and serve more than 1,100 sixth and seventh grade students in the Johnston Community School District.

At Summit, we regard students as individuals and recognize their unique lived experiences as assets to our school community.  Staff are committed to cultivating a learning environment that emphasizes equity and inclusivity while maintaining high expectations for all students.  As educators, we understand the privilege we hold in completely changing the trajectory of students’ lives and educational experiences, and we believe in engaging in actions that lead to positive outcomes for all student groups.

The refinement of our already established multi-tiered system of support is a focal area as we ensure that our school’s structure allows for success of identified goals at the student, classroom, grade and building levels.  Staff are able to problem solve students holistically given the adoption of practices that are both collaborative and integrated in nature.  In turn, students are connected with appropriate resources and supports across the following domains: academics, behavior, and social-emotional learning.

Evidence of high levels of academic achievement is salient throughout Summit’s existence.  In addition to students excelling academically, Summit staff aspire to play a pivotal role in developing student leaders within and outside the building.  Staff will leverage the gifts and abilities possessed by all students through intentionality around the implementation of practices outlined in the Leader in Me framework.

I am honored and privileged to serve all students, staff, and families as principal of Summit Middle School.  For additional information or questions, please contact me directly at 515-986-0318 or kaniesha.pettaway@johnston.k12.ia.us.
