December SkaScooty Dooty

Be sure to read the December edition of the student newspaper.  This month is brought to you by the 6thgrade Media Literacy class.

Featured Book of the Week

Dead Wednesday by Jerry Spinelli describes an unusual ritual a small town has done for years.  One day a year, every middle schooler is given a name of a teenager that died from a preventable cause and assumes their identity for a day (being dead, so everyone ignores them).  Teachers and parents believe it will help caution young kids to be more responsible teenagers and adults.  Worm finds being invisible a welcome treat for the day.  But when he is assigned Becca (a teenage girl who died in a car accident while driving in a snowstorm), he doesn’t expect Becca to actually talk to him.   Worm ends up learning much more this day about life and death than he ever would have expected.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY

Any student interested in participating in National History Day can attend an informational meeting on Monday, December 20, 2021 in Ms. Ites’ room (Expedition #137) from 2:50 – 4:00pm.  NHD is a research-based history competition based on an annual theme; this year’s theme is Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences Students may present their research individually or in groups in one of five categories:  paper (individual only), exhibit, documentary, performance, or website.

Students must have transportation arrangements to get home following the meeting.  In January there will be before and after school drop in times for students to work on their projects, times TBD. See Ms. Ites with any questions (colleen.ites@jdragonmail.us).
