MATHCOUNTS CLUB
Come join the MATHCOUNTS CLUB!!!
More than a quarter million students participate in MATHCOUNTS programs or use their resources each year. At Summit, students meet to solve problems and build problem solving skills. They will meet after school every-other week, on Mondays, starting the first week of October in Ms. Lewis’s room in Team Mission. Our first meeting is Oct. 1 (Tuesday).
In January, students will begin meeting every week on Monday’s after school to get ready for 4 levels of competition. This is open to any student who enjoys problem solving with others in a competitive environment. Our school competition will be in January, a local competition in February, state in March and then the National Competition.
The coaches are Mr. Steve Skinner and Ms. Linda Lewis. Anyone is welcome to join and there are links on the Activities and Clubs Moodle page under MATHCOUNTS.

FROM THE LIBRARY
Book Club
Our student-led Book Club is going to have its first meeting on Monday, Sept. 23rd. Join us in the library from 2:50-3:30. You must have a ride home at 3:30. Please see attached flyer for all this year’s Book Club dates. Join us for all or some of the meetings.
Book in the Jar Contest
Be sure to stop by the library and see if you can correctly guess what book is in the jar! Contest ends Sept. 20th and then the winner will be announced.
Featured Book of the Week
Seen and Unseen is on this year’s Iowa Teen Choice list. This is a nonfiction book about the photographers who documented what happened to Japanese Americans during World War II. This book includes many of the award winning photographs from the removal and internment of Japanese-American people. You can find this book in the library on the Award Book easel or on MackinVIA (on your iPads).
GARDEN CLUB
The Summit Middle School Garden Club has a mission of making a difference in our community while providing students the opportunity to connect, have fun, and learn gardening skills! So far this gardening season, we have provided over 350 pounds of produce to the Johnston Partnership and our garden is not done yet!
Students get to experience all layers of gardening from bed prepping, weeding, watering, harvesting, etc. In the winter months we have done donation drives for the Partnership, started seeds and planned our garden for spring, and celebrated teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week– we stay busy all year long!
We meet Thursdays from 2:50-3:30 in Mission Room 129. All 6th and 7th graders are welcome, and no gardening experience is necessary! Come with shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
