Teachers will update weekly assignments every Sunday so students know what needs to be done the following week. In the weekly updates, teachers will communicate any due dates for student work.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
22/23 YEARBOOKS ARE GOING FAST! If you pre-purchased a yearbook but did not receive it in your PRIDE class today –OR-your yearbook was purchased on-line in the last few days COME TO THE FRONT OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! We want to make sure everyone who purchased a book gets one before we run out!
JMS FAMILIES – you can still purchase a yearbook for your student by paying on-line through Infinite Campus (under Optional Fees). Once you have done that – tell your student to come pick-up their book in the Front Office. Of course, you can send them with $30 cash or a check!

LOCKERS & LOST-n-FOUND: Students, if you misplaced anything throughout this school year – please make sure you have looked through our LOST-n-FOUND box in the Commons and make sure your locker is cleaned out before the end of the school year. Any unclaimed items left behind our LOST-n-FOUND area and in lockers will be donated after June 1.

SUMMER WEIGHTLIFTING + SPEED & AGILITY: Current 7th and 8th Grade Students & Guardians: Please see the information below about the Summer Weightlifting and Speed & Agility opportunities. This program is free to all Johnston Community School District registered students that will be in 8th or 9th grade in the Fall of 2023. No registration or sign up is needed. Attendance will be taken as students arrive.

CANCELLATION PROCEDURE:
In the event that we need to cancel a session due to instructor illness/emergency, PARENTS will receive an email notification from Melissa Crosse, Assistant Activities Director.
SCHEDULE:
Current 7th grade students will attend the 8th grade sessions.
Current 8th grade students will attend the 9th grade sessions.
Current 9th grade students will attend Johnston High School sessions. (Info coming soon)

There is no cost or registration for this program. Students must be enrolled in the Johnston Community School District and attend JMS next fall. Current 9th grade students will attend sessions at the high school.
Expectations & Requirements:
- Enter the weight room mentally and physically ready to work
- No horseplay at any time
- Use common sense and avoid potentially dangerous situations
- No food or drink or gum in the Weight Room, other than water
- Wear proper lifting clothes
- Shoes Must Be Worn at All Times (No Sandals, Open Toe Shoes, CROCS).
- No headphones (Be coachable to hear coach/teammate feedback and timing system)
- A spotter must be used on all free lifting stations. Example: Bench Press, Incline Press, Overhead Press.
- Return all free weights to their correct weight racks
- Report any Injury to the supervisor immediately
- Never lift weights without a supervisor present In the room
- Follow the prescribed weight and repetition assigned by your individual program
- Never sacrifice technique for weight! Technique and quality repetitions are the priority
- Bring the right attitude, effort, and energy. We are here to work!
- Help to create an environment that encourages optimal performance. BE EXCELLENT!

FAMILY WEEK:
The Unified Activity Federation (Iowa High School Athletic Association, Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, Iowa High School Music Association, and Iowa High School Speech Association) Non-Contact Period for the summer of 2022 will be Sunday, July 23, 2023, through Sunday, July 30, 2023. This is the second year of an annual break in activities across Iowa each summer. During this time, there will be no Activities in the Johnston Community School District to include camps, clinics, workouts, strength and conditioning, lessons, meetings, emails, etc.

GIRLS TENNIS CAMP: June 5-9 12:30-3:00pm
Interested in playing high school tennis or just interested in honing the game? Come to our tennis camp for 7-9th grade girls! Some of the camp takeaways include: serving form, improving forehand and backhand, volleying, setting goals, the mental game, and game strategy.

DMACC ONLINE COURSES FALL 2023: Registration is now open for online DMACC courses for students who will be in 9th or 10th grade this coming Fall. The list of classes can be found here. Students will need to determine what class(es) they are interested in, fill out the Memo of Understanding, and then meet with Mrs. Lunn to get registered. More information, including FAQs can be found on the JMS Counseling website. The deadline for registration is June 1st. Please reach out to Mrs. Lunn via email (kayla.lunn@johnston.k12.ia.us) if you have any questions or would like to set up a time to meet to get registered.

SCHOOL DRIVER’S PERMITS:
ATTENTION 8th GRADE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A SCHOOL PERMIT
BEGINNING – TUESDAY, MAY 30th current 8th grade students will be able to get DOT paperwork in order to obtain a School Permit for the 2023-24 school year. However, you must complete ALL of the steps listed below:
1–Be a 9th grader at JMS for the 2023-24 school year
2–Have had your Learners Permit for at least 6 months
3–Successfully completed Driver’s Education
4–Go to the following link https://www.johnstoncsd.org/school-news/school-drivers-permit-process/ and complete all 3 of the steps outlined for you on the website [Students will need to log in with THEIR jdragonmail credentials in order to watch the video and complete the quiz.]
I) Watch the instructional video. [The video contains the information that was presented at permit meetings in the past and will now take the place of those meetings.]
II) Complete the online quiz with at least 9 questions answered correctly. One parent will need to watch the video and note the completion of the quiz.
III) BEGINNING TUESDAY, MAY 30th Go to the JMS main office and pick up your signed Department of Transportation (DOT) form during office hours. ** During summer hours, please call the JMS Office to verify hours. If you wish to purchase a parking tag for the 23-24 school year, bring $20 for the parking tag (please have your license plate information at the time of purchase).
5–Schedule an appointment with the Department of Transportation to get your School Permit. You will need to take your Learners Permit and the completed DOT form to your appointment.
ATTENTION SCHOOL PERMIT DRIVERS: We want to keep you safe and legal. REMEMBER YOU CAN ONLY DRIVE TO SCHOOL–you should not be driving to any other location with this permit! Please review the laws/expectations of your School Permit.
USAGE: When can I use my School Permit?
· Only within the school boundaries
· To school or school sponsored event
LOCATIONS: ** Where do I go with my School Permit? **
· Travel the direct route (App.)
· Gas stations should be on or nearest to the route
TRANSPORTING OTHERS: Can anyone else ride with me?
· One passenger other than siblings
· This does not change the direct route expectation, passengers must start and stop at your locations
VIOLATIONS: What will happen to me if I don’t obey the law?
· Examples of Law Enforcement Consequences
· Loss of privileges (Ex: 2 or more Moving Violations = Revoked for 1 year)
· Monetary (Ex: $195 for Speeding Violation)
· Prolonged time for license
· School Consequences
· Typically: Warning, Alternative parking sight, Loss of privilege
PARKING: Where can I park while I’m at school?
· Back Lot – North side of JMS (Enter Door 15)
· Must have purchased a parking tag ($20) in the JMS Front Office
· Use only non “staff parking” spots
