DAILY ROTATION SCHEDULE

Teachers will update weekly assignments every Friday so students know what needs to be done the following week. In the weekly updates, teachers will communicate any due dates for student work.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

9th Grade GIRLS TENNIS — ATTENTION: Girls in 9th Grade interested in TENNIS!

Tennis anyone? Any 9th grade girl interested in playing Johnston Tennis this spring, come to an informational meeting in the LMC this THURSDAY, October 14th at 3:15pm.

If you cannot attend the meeting, sign up at the athletic office by Friday, using the QR code. Information will be sent to your email.

WOMEN’S GOLF — Please fill out the following form to communicate your intentions for JHS Spring Women’s Golf 2022 (students must fill out the form).  JHS Spring Women’s Golf is for current 9th-12th graders.  However, if numbers allow, current 7th- 8th graders may be allowed to join the team for practices and to gain experience.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Coach Hattel at chattel@johnston.k12.ia.us.

HONOR BAND — Congratulations to the following 8th grade students who were selected to play in the 8th Grade South Central Iowa Honor Band on November 2nd.  They participated in a rigorous audition process with students from all over central Iowa.

MEN’S GOLF — The JHS Men’s Golf Team placed 5th at the IHSAA Men’s State Golf Tournament at Beaver Hills Country Club in Cedar Falls, IA, on 10/8 and 10/9.  Individual finishers for 36 holes- Calen Bishop +9 (15th), Matt Pineda +15 (30th), Krishiv Gupta +15 (32nd), Owen Howe +16 (36th), Ben Christy +18 (41st) out of 81 golfers from throughout the state. 18 Holes- Tyler Herrmann 80 on Day 1, Nate Freidhoff 84 on Day 2. Thanks to Dragon Nation for making the trip up to Cedar Falls, our numbers were strong and our presence was known throughout the golf course!

The Dragons finished their season with a record of 90-16 and 5th best combined adjusted average in the state and 5th place finish at state.

Best of luck to the other sports this year as the Men’s golf team started #ChampionshipSeason off!

REPEAT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

STUDENT COUNCIL WINTER WARMTH DRIVE — After a one-year break, the Winter Warmth Drive is coming back this fall! From October 11th to 15th,  JMS Student Council is asking that you donate any winter clothing items that you can spare: coats, snow-pants, boots, hats, gloves/mittens, scarfs, etc. We would like to help families in the metro area this winter to make sure they are properly clothed for the incoming colder weather.

The winning PRIDE class that donates the most items will be able to get hot chocolate and treats hosted by student council during PRIDE. Items will be tallied as they are collected in the designated drop-off locations. You can find the donation boxes in Anderson’s room (209), Comstock’s room (123), the library, and the main office. Over 12,000 items were collected by metro schools in 2019…let’s see if we can beat that! Tell your friends and family. Thanks, Dragons!

9th GRADE GIRLS BASKETBALL — Any 9th grade girl wanting to sign up for basketball this season needs to attend the pre-season player / parent meeting with one or both of their parents / guardians on Sunday night October 17th at 6:30 in the JHS commons.  Please make plans to attend. BEST BUDDIES — Best buddies will have a parent/student meeting next Tuesday October 12th at 6pm in the JMS Auditorium. This should only be a half hour meeting. JHS BOWLING — If you are a 9-12 Grade Student, interested in BOWLING, please ATTEND THE MEETING TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12 – 4:30PM AT HIGH SCHOOL. Students can ride the activity shuttle over from JMS to JHS.

BOWLING will start in OCTOBER, coaches will have pre-season meetings AND coaches will send emails with information to registered students.

ALL BOWLING Players must also have a parent register them for athletics using the link below, and a sports physical on file.

JMS WRESTLING — All 7th and 8th graders can begin signing up for wrestling NOW.  The season begins Monday October 18th.  Johnston has a middle school wrestling team for 7th/8th grade students.  You can sign up at:

Wrestling is a great sport for brand new participants all the way to experienced wrestlers!

LARGE GROUP SPEECH — ATTENTION 9TH GRADERS — Do you like to act on a stage? Do you like to come up with things on the fly? Do you like working in groups? If so, large group speech may be a fit for you. There are many types of events you can participate in.  Please come to an informational meeting on October 12th at 3:15pm. We will meet in Mr. Fitzpatrick’s room (can ride the activity bus to the high school) and I will provide more information about large group speech and the events you can participate in. If you are unable to make it, please email me at tyler.stough@johnston.k12.ia.us and I can get you the information.

JMS WEIGHT ROOM — Below you will find information regarding our Weightlifting Program.

WEIGHTLIFTING HOURS OF OPERATION:

8th Grade Students – 3:00-4:00pm – Monday & Thursday

9th Grade Students – 3:00-4:00pm – Tuesday & Friday

LOCATION:

JMS Weight Room – Closest Entrance is Door 15

FALL SCHEDULE:

1st Official Day – Monday, August 30 – 8th & 9th Informational Meeting & Instructions

Last Day of Fall – Friday, October 22

CLOSED DATES:

School Early Dismissal Days = no weightlifting

School Weather Dismissal Days = no weightlifting

Non School Days / Holidays = no weightlifting

ATTENTION SCHOOL PERMIT DRIVERS: We want to keep you safe and legal. REMEMBER YOU CAN ONLY DRIVE TO SCHOOL–you should not be driving to any other location with this permit! Please review the laws/expectations of your School Permit.

USAGE: When can I use my School Permit?

·  Only within the school boundaries

·  To school or school sponsored event

LOCATIONS:  ** Where do I go with my School Permit? **

·  Travel the direct route (App.)

·  Gas stations should be on or nearest to the route

TRANSPORTING OTHERS:  Can anyone else ride with me?

·  One passenger other than siblings

·  This does not change the direct route expectation, passengers must start and stop at your locations

VIOLATIONS:  What will happen to me if I don’t obey the law?

·  Examples of Law Enforcement Consequences

·  Loss of privileges (Ex: 2 or more Moving Violations = Revoked for 1 year)

·  Monetary (Ex: $195 for Speeding Violation)

·  Prolonged time for license

·  School Consequences

·  Typically: Warning, Alternative parking sight, Loss of privilege

PARKING: Where can I park while I’m at school?

·  Back Lot – North side of JMS (Enter Door 15)

·  Must have purchased a parking tag ($20) in the JMS Front Office

·  Use only non “staff parking” spots

9th grade students who wish to obtain a school driver’s permit can follow the following link: https://www.johnstoncsd.org/school-news/school-drivers-permit-process/

This link will guide them to a Google Site. Students will need to log in with their jdragonmail credentials in order to watch a video and complete a quiz. The video contains the information that was presented at permit meetings in the past and will now take the place of those meetings. One parent will need to watch the video and note that completion on the quiz. As usual, the only students eligible are 9th graders who have completed driver’s education and have had their learner’s permit for at least six months. After the quiz has been completed, students can pick up their signed Department of Transportation form in the JMS Front Office. Students will need a parking tag to park on school grounds during the school year. Parking tags are available for $20 when students pick up their DOT form. Please make sure you have your license plate number with you at the time of purchase.
