JHS BOYS SWIM UPDATE
Nikolay Silkin goes 49.40 in the 100 free for a lifetime best swim and 21.91 in the 50 Free at State for a lifetime best swim!
Maxwell Deacon has a lifetime best in the 100 fly going 52.46!!

Congratulations to the 400 free relay team of Jack Meyer, Maanit Sheth, Max Deacon and Nikolay Silkin on their 15th place finish!  The team finished in 25th place overall.  Congratulations guys!!!

The Dragons went 1:39.39 for a 15th place finish in the 200 Medley Relay!  Way to go!!!  Everyone had best times!

Great news coming from Central Conference Bowling Meet this week! Among seven schools, Johnston boys captured 3rd in team bowling. Girls took 5th. In the individual competition, Maria Wilcox (Johnston) took 5th among girls. For boys, Zach Moorman (Johnston) took 16th. and Keiden Cowell (Johnston) 5th. Roman Boley (DCG) placed 2nd and Caden Klug (DCG) 1st. Qualification for state will be determined next Monday (girls) and Tuesday (boys) at Districts in Waterloo.  JHS/DCG High School Bowling Club

Johnston’s Cantus performed at the MidWest American Choral Directors Association (MWACDA) Convention at the Holland Performing Arts Center in Omaha today. Congratulations!!💜💛🎶


Congratulations to five JHS students who were today named finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program! They are: Peyton Brown, Owen Ferguson, Siddarth Rajkumar, Maanit Sheth and Anthony Wang. These seniors will compete for 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million. Dragons finish off their 2 undefeated regular season in 3 years with the win tonight.

ESPN ranks Johnston #20 in the nation in the recent rankings 👀 The Dragons are currently 20-0 on the season in Class 5A 🔥  GO DRAGONS!!!

Six JHS seniors signed their intent to play sports in college on National Letter of Intent (NLI) and National Signing Day! Madi Pospeshil will play softball at Simpson College. Anthony Kiatamba will play football for Ellsworth Community College. Taye Proctor will play football at Drake University. Maxwell Deacon will swim for Coe College. Josh Kerber will play football at St. Olaf College. And Dalen Houston will play football at Iowa Central. Congratulations!

JHS student Kathir Kalyanaraman was recently honored by the Johnston mayor and city council for his outstanding community service!  With his his @tgiftfoundation he dedicated himself to distributing hundreds of laptop computers and handheld electronic devices to refugees and other immigrants in Iowa. #JohnstonServes

The 21st annual Dragon Scholarship Fund Auction represents our flagship fundraising event for the current year. This year’s auction will be held online only, starting on February 25 and ends on March 2. This is our largest fundraiser and all proceeds support financial assistance to the Senior class for their education beyond high school. We have an extensive collection of over 100 packages. These packages are not restricted to residents of Johnston, as we have sourced offerings from various locations within the metropolitan area, extending as far as Omaha and Kansas City. Two Johnston students qualified for nationals in speech and debate! Ella Devine in Dramatic Interpretation and Advik Bajpai in International Extemporaneous Speaking. Congratulations to both of them and all the students who made the finals!

Superintendent Dr. Nikki Roorda and school board members Clint Evans, Lya Williams and Deb Davis were among those helping Johnston IJAG students practice with mock interviews this week! Thanks to them and to Jyll Johnson Miner, Bob Devens, Instructional Coach Sarah Howe, iJAG manager Caitlin Snodgrass, Lindsey Gannon, Sarah Love, Jenny Palmer, Jenn Whitted, Lisa Noe and Kenya Pruitt for volunteering their time to help our students practice their interview and phone skills! 💜💛

CONGRATULATIONS JOHNSTON BOYS SWIM TEAM!!

The Johnston Boys Swim team finished 3rd in the District meet held Saturday, February 3rd. Due to hard work every swimmer on the team posted time drops. This contributed to a strong season finish.
Qualifying for State are the 200 medley relay team of Logan Williams, Maanit Sheth, Max Deacon and Jack Meyer and the 400 free relay team of Jack Meyer, Maanit Sheth, Max Deacon and Nikolay Silkin. Max Deacon also qualified in the 100 fly and Nikolay Silkin in both the 50 free and the 100 free. Carter Mann and Will Mettenbrink have been named team alternates.
In addition, Johnston was voted the District Coaching Staff of the Year.
The JHS Varsity Marching Band today kicked off Marching Band Experience Days at JMS to get middle schoolers a sneak peek of what it’s like to be in marching band and color guard! Those interested can attend one of three upcoming events before the official kickoff of the new season with ExtravaBANDza in May!

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate today presented Johnston High School with the Carrie Chapman Catt Award. The award, named after the Iowan who was a national leader in the women’s suffrage movement, recognizes JHS for securing voter registration pledge cards from more than 90 percent of the JHS senior class of about 600. Johnston is the largest high school in the state to receive the award. https://t.co/HyF2wctPn6

Johnston ProStart students Corey Suckow, Davis Cope and Jasmine Newman served guests at the Inaugural Legislative Reception on Tuesday at Centro Restaurant in Des Moines. Students got the unique opportunity to learn a little about the legislative process, what’s important to Iowa’s hospitality industry in this arena, and the chance to meet some elected officials while working at this event. The reception was “A Taste of Iowa” with food prepared by Centro’s culinary team, featuring some unique Iowa items: pork tenderloin sliders, scotcheroos, sour cream raisin pie and Steak De Burgo, to name a few. Students enjoyed the opportunity!

These five JHS band students were selected to play in today’s 48th annual Cyclone Honor Band Festival at Stephens Auditorium, Iowa State University in Ames! Congratulations! 🎶

Attention all 10th and 11th graders.  Do you want to attend the Iowa Youth Institute sponsored by Iowa State University and World Food Prize Foundation.    Students who are interested in attending will research a global challenge related to food security and write a simple research paper.  All students that submit a paper will get to attend the Iowa Youth Institute and will be in the running for scholarships, qualifying for the Global Youth Institute and be eligible for international internships.

More information about the opportunity can be found in this Global Challenge informational document .  We will work with any interested students to complete the research and submit the paper.
