Johnston’s Zach Moorman and DCG’s Caden Klug tied for 5th place among 32 of the state’s best high school bowlers at the 2024 Iowa High School Bowling Championships! The two from the JHS/DCG High School Bowling Club qualified as individuals for state, being held at Cadillac XBC in Waterloo. The team also placed fourth at state. Way to go!

Two Johnston school robotics teams, the Disco Duck Bots and Atomic Narwhals, are advancing to the 2024 FIRST Tech Challenge: Iowa Championship, March 1-2 at the Xtream Arena in Coralville! At the qualifier, Disco Duck Bots was the runner up for Inspire Award and the Connect Award, while the Atomic Narwhals won the Motivate Award and were in the finals of the robot competition. Team T.H.O.R., a community team that includes some Johnston students, won the Inspire Award and the robot game.

Science and Sustainability club is hosting a clothing swap on March 1st from 3-5 PM in the cafeteria. Bring in any old or unwanted clothes that you would like to donate, and feel free to take any clothes donated to the swap! Donations can be brought directly to the event or dropped off any time before the event in room 220. For questions please contact musgrave.edie@jdragonmail.us

Congratulations to 

 Wrestling’s Caden Leonard and Kolby Gibbons for both achieving a 7th place podium finish at state! In 150, Caden won 10-6 this morning over Jake Pontier of Indianola. In 190, Kolby defeated Isaac Thacher of Fort Madison, 3-1

The JHS/DCG High School Bowling Club finishes 4th in the state as a team! Congratulations! Two of our bowlers compete in the individual portion of the 2024 Iowa High School Bowling Championships!

All conference recognition came out today.  Congratulations to Aili, Aaliyah, Amani, and Jenica on all 4 making 1st Team All CIML.



The school board tonight recognized JHS junior Jacob Helgeson for being Johnston’s first two-time state champion in wrestling! Jacob won the state championship in Class 3A, 165 lbs at the 2024 IHSAA State Wrestling Championships. Jacob ends the season 34-1 and reached his 100th career win in January while at a tournament in Marshalltown. He was one of three Johnston wrestlers who made the podium at state this year, along with teammates Caden Leonard and Kolby Gibbons, who placed 7th in 150 and 190 lbs. This is the second state wrestling championship for Jacob. Last year, he was the Class 3A state wrestling champion in the 152 lb weight class. The
 Wrestling program is led by Head Varsity Coach Aaron Tecklenburg. Congratulations! 
CONGRATULATIONS SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
Eleven students on the JHS and JMS Science Olympiad teams on Saturday competed at the Mount Vernon Invitational, part of a nationwide academic competition where students compete in 23 events that include earth science, biology, chemistry, physics and engineering. Our students did great! Results are as follows: Can’t judge a powder – 2nd (JMS) Codebusters – 2nd (JMS) Ecology – 1st (JHS) Fermi question – 1st (JHS) Forensics – 2nd (JHS) Forestry – 1st (JHS) Geologic mapping – 1st (JHS) Write it, do it – 3rd (JHS) Students participating: Liam Dickson, Joanna Foo, Sree Bethanapalli, Kovidh Talluri and Syon Aggarwal from JMS; and Siddarth Rajkumar, Sarah Watkins, Celia DiNitto, Sydney Maule, Marissa Randall, and Kaylee Jones from JHS.  Students were accompanied by science teachers Sean Robbins and Adrianne Herbert. Over 7,800 middle school and high school teams from 50 U.S. states compete each year in Science Olympiad, designed to increase students’ interest in STEM fields and provide recognition for outstanding achievement in team events. Students in Science Olympiad can advance from regional to state and national levels.
Johnston show choirs had a great day at the Davenport Central Great River Show Choir Invitational! In the finals, Innovation was named the Grand Champions and Synergy took 2nd Runner Up! During the day, Bella Voce placed 1st in the Treble Division and Synergy Placed 1st in the Prep Division. Congratulations!! 
JHS Junior, Aubrey O’Leary sang the National Anthem at State Wrestling this morning! Congrats on being selected for this honor! ❤️
Mid-Winter Band Concert  
Johnston is among 20 school districts at the Iowa State Capitol today for Day on the Hill! The collaborative event by the Iowa Association of School Boards, Iowa’s Area Education Agencies and the School Administrators of Iowa is showcasing some of the innovative programs and amazing things that we are doing! 
SPRING EMT CLASS FOR 24-25 SCHOOL YEAR OPPORTUNITY
GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO EARN ASSOCIATE DEGREE AT JHS
Attention all 10th and 11th graders.  Do you want to attend the Iowa Youth Institute sponsored by Iowa State University and World Food Prize Foundation.    Students who are interested in attending will research a global challenge related to food security and write a simple research paper.  All students that submit a paper will get to attend the Iowa Youth Institute and will be in the running for scholarships, qualifying for the Global Youth Institute and be eligible for international internships.

More information about the opportunity can be found in this Global Challenge informational document .  We will work with any interested students to complete the research and submit the paper.
