- JOHNSTON FIRST TECH CHALLENGE: Great job by the Johnston First Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams this weekend at the League Championship in Nevada! 3 Johnston school teams will advance to the Super Regional at John Deere Financial on Feb 1st! Below are the teams and descriptions of the awards won.
Advancing Teams (in alphabetical order):
- Atomic Narwhals – rookie FTC team from Johnston Middle School – advanced by winning the Design award. Team members: Lauren Wessling, Sejal Sharma, Sarah Watkins, Rahul Santharaman, Mitch Driscoll, James Anderson, Ben Anderson, Joshua Janni, Wyatt Evans
- Galactic Robogeese – rookie FTC team from Johnston Middle School – advanced as part of the winning FTC alliance. Team members: Sruthi Vallabhajosyula, Dima Alqaysi, Shaima Loukili, Ben Cramer, Joe Cramer, Anthony Wang, Zac Quartell, Matthew Thompson, Trey Loggins
- Stranger Bots – Johnston High School FTC team – advances to super regional due to 3rd place for Inspire Aware and second place for Think Award. Team members: Siri Mandava, Fabiola Castaneda-Santiago, Teja Jetty, Alex Lehman, Nora McCormick, Katrina Nguyen, Kunal Singhal
Award Descriptions:
- Inspire Award – this award is given to the team that best embodies the ‘challenge’ of the FIRST Tech Challenge program.
- Think Award – this award is given to the team that best reflects the journey the team took as they experienced the engineering design process during the build season.
- Design Award – this award recognizes design elements of the robot that are both functional and aesthetic.
- MILITARY CARE PACKAGES : We are organizing care packages for military members at Camp Dodge as part of our ELP project to affect change for the greater good in our community. We are collecting the following food items in boxes in the Lobby Vestibule in front of the office until Friday January 17, 2020.

- gummy candy
- suckers
- water flavoring packets (kool aid, coffee, hot chocolate, and lemonade)
- beef jerky
- Slim Jim’s
- protein or snack bars
- labeled homemade treats
- microwave popcorn
- gum
Military personnel also appreciate these additional items:
- decks of cards
- card games
- good quality socks
- chapstick
- pens
- notebooks
- board games
- movies
- puzzle books
- word cross books.
These packages will be organized and sent out this winter through the USO at Camp Dodge. By just getting one extra item when you’re Christmas shopping, Iowa’s military can have their own treats! You can turn in these items at boxes in the lobby vestibule in front of the school office.
