- SPECIAL PE ANNOUNCEMENT: There will be no Ice-Skating offered for Free Choice Friday due to the extreme temperatures.
- SUMMIT POOL: Monday, Feb. 17th is a NO SCHOOL day. The Summit Pool will be open for open/lap swim from 1:00 – 3:00pm. The cost will be $3.00 per swimmer.
- FROM THE LIBRARY: Featured Book of the Week: Blended by Sharon M. Draper Blended tells the story of Isabella who is “blended” in two ways. First she has a black father and a white mother. Second her parents have got divorced and are now currently both engaged to other people, so she will now have a blended family. This is a great book about feeling torn in 2 directions and feeling caught in the middle.

- ISTEP (ANTI-VAPING CLUB) TRIVIA CONTEST: ISTEP (the anti-vaping and tobacco club) will sponsor a trivia contest during lunch Friday, February 14. Eight students will be selected and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
- NHD DROP-INS FOR FEBRUARY:: Thurs 2/13, Tues 2/18, Thurs 2/20, Tues 2/25, Fri 2/28 Online Registration for the Merle Hay Regional is due on 2/26; Ms. Ites will be helping students sign up during the NHD drop-ins the week of Feb. 18. Email Ms. Ites with any questions.
- JOHNSTON FIRST TECH CHALLENGE : Great job by the Johnston First Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams Feb 1 at the Super Regional at John Deere Financial! 2 Johnston school teams will advance to state in Cedar Rapids Feb 28-29! Below are the teams and descriptions of the awards won.
Advancing Teams (in alphabetical order):
- Atomic Narwhals – rookie FTC team from Johnston Middle School – advanced by placing third for Inspire award and winning the Control Award. Team members: Lauren Wessling, Sejal Sharma, Sarah Watkins, Rahul Santharaman, Mitch Driscoll, James Anderson, Ben Anderson, Joshua Janni, Wyatt Evans
- Galactic Robogeese – rookie FTC team from Johnston Middle School – advanced as part of the second place FTC alliance. Team members: Sruthi Vallabhajosyula, Dima Alqaysi, Shaima Loukili, Ben Cramer, Joe Cramer, Anthony Wang, Zac Quartell, Matthew Thompson, Trey Loggins
Award Descriptions:
- Inspire Award – this award is given to the team that best embodies the ‘challenge’ of the FIRST Tech Challenge program.
- Control Award – this award celebrates a team that uses sensors and software to increase the robot’s functionality in the field.
- MIDDLE SCHOOL SWIMMING: Middle School Swimming (7th and 8th Grades) – First day of practice is Tuesday, February 18th (due to no school the day prior for Johnston students). Practices are Monday – Friday 3:30-4:30 for 7th graders and 4:30-5:30 for 8th graders (and other school participants to allow for extra travel time.) Last practice will be March 10th with an ice cream social. Bussing will be provided each from JMS to Summit after school. The shuttle bus will be located in the front of the bus line each day.
Coaches will offer a stroke clinic that will be offered from Monday, February 10th – Thursday, February 13th from 3:30-4:30. This is open to all swimmers (grades 7-8) who are beginning in competitive swimming. We will have high school swimmers on hand to help assist breaking down techniques of one stroke per night. Butterfly – Monday (10th), Backstroke – Tuesday (11th), Breaststroke – Wednesday (12th), Freestyle/Recap – Thursday (13th). Swimmers can come to one night if they need particular help with that stroke or come to all.
All participants must complete the online athletic registration at https://johnstoncsd-ar.rschooltoday.com/. This is also the site where the athletic physical must be uploaded prior to practice.
