The Unsung Hero of Birdsong, USA is a novel by Brenda Woods that takes place during the 1950s in the South. Gabriel gets a new bike for his 12th birthday and on his maiden voyage almost gets hit by a car. The man who pulled him to safely at just the right moment is Meriwether, an African American World War II vet. To show his gratitude Gabriel helps Meriwether get a job at his dad’s auto repair shop. This does not go over well with some of the other workers at the shop. This is a Coretta Scott King award winning book. Read it and you’ll see why!
