Whittle named Director of Technology

Ericawhittle 3 editJOHNSTON, Ia. (March 7, 2025) — Dr. Erica Whittle has been named the Johnston Community School District’s new Director of Technology, pending March 10 approval by the school board. She will succeed Tony Sparks, who retired in December.

Whittle has 15 years of experience in educational administration including serving for the past three years as Johnston’s Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning. Under her leadership and collaboration with the technology department, JCSD installed interactive Newline panels in classrooms throughout the district. The district was also named one of 17 school districts in the nation and one of two in Iowa recognized as an Apple Distinguished School District

“With a strong background in educational technology integration and leadership, a strategic mindset, and a passion for advancing both administrative and instructional technology solutions, I believe I am uniquely positioned to contribute to our district’s mission and goals,” Whittle said.

Prior to her time in Johnston, Whittle served in West Des Moines for seven years as a middle school principal and high school associate principal. She also worked in Dallas Center Grimes for five years as an instructional coach and 8th and 9th grade teacher.

Whittle received her bachelor’s degree in middle school education from Northwest Missouri State University, and her masters of education in technology integration from Graceland University. She received her specialist in education licensure and superintendent endorsement from Drake University, and her doctorate in educational leadership from Drake University. Her dissertation focused on the emotional intelligence of teachers and the impact of COVID-19.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Instructional Services, the Director of Technology leads the district’s efforts with digital tools, platforms and resources that will drive innovation in teaching and learning, ensuring equitable access and seamless integration into daily instruction and operations. In addition, the director serves as a visionary leader responsible for shaping and driving the technology strategy of the district, overseeing the development, implementation, management and evaluation of a robust and comprehensive information technology (IT) system.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Whittle into her new role as our Director of Technology,” Superintendent Dr. Nikki Roorda said. “Her strong background in teaching and learning and our work in JCSD, coupled with her technological expertise, will enhance our district’s technology strategy and implementation in the years to come.”

Whittle will begin her new role on July 1.
