JHS production of “The Fiddler on the Roof” receives six state theater awards

JOHNSTON, Ia. (May 8, 2024) —  The Johnston High School Drama Department has received six awards for its spring 2024 production of “The Fiddler on the Roof,” the 2023-2024 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards announced today.  

I am pleased Johnston has once again been recognized by the IHSMTA and am incredibly proud of everyone involved,” said Jeremy Fitzpatrick, a JHS teacher who directed the production.

In addition, JHS senior Eric Franczyk has been invited to participate in the “Triple Threat Program,” for advanced students who served in principal roles for their production and are considered well-rounded performers who can act, sing and dance.

IMG 5878Franczyk will be among the students chosen to receive individual coaching with a New York-based choreographer and music director. They will then perform in a spotlight medley at the 2024 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase, which will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at the Des Moines Civic Center. 

Two other JHS students will also participate in the opening medley of the showcase.

Each year,  the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase brings together student performers representing more than 100 participating Iowa high schools from across the state. Johnston High School has consistently done well with its spring musical and has played a role in the showcase for several years.
