JOHNSTON, Ia. (May 8, 2024) — A new location has been added to the Johnston Community School District’s program offering free meals for kids in summer 2024.

The Johnston High School Cafeteria at 6500 NW 100th St. will offer both breakfast and lunch to children 18 and under during this year’s free Summer Food Service Program, a federally funded USDA program sponsored by JCSD.

The new site will be in addition to the two locations where free lunches were offered last year, and will once again be offered this year: Sterling Point at 10509 Dorset Dr., and St. James Lutheran Church at 5665 Merle Hay Rd.

This year’s free summer meals for kids will be served from June 10 to Aug. 9 with the exception of July 1-5, when the program will be closed the week of the Fourth of July.

Like last year, meals must be eaten on site. Children do not need to be residents or students of the Johnston Community School District to attend. Those attending lunch at Sterling Point or St. James on Wednesdays can also enjoy storytime in addition to the free meal.

The district partners with the Johnston Partnership every year to provide volunteers for this event at Sterling Point or St. James. See the Johnston Partnership Volunteer Page for opportunities as the date gets closer.
