Woodley becomes Johnston’s fifth Coach of the Year
JOHNSTON, Ia. (Dec. 20, 2022) — Johnston High School head football coach and teacher Brian Woodley has been named The Iowa Football Coaches Association (IFCA)’s Class 5A Coach of the Year.
Woodley took the Johnston varsity football team to the state semifinals at the UNI Dome during the fall 2022 season for the first time in program history, after exciting playoff wins against Iowa City (38-31) and Ankeny (23-13). The Dragons ended the season with an overall 8-4 record.
This isn’t the first time that Woodley has earned this recognition. In 2017, Woodley was named Coach of the Year when Johnston was a Class 4A school for a football season with an outstanding 8-1 record. The Iowa Football Coaches Association is a statewide organization, serving all Iowa football coaches and providing resources on team development and coaching.
Woodley becomes the fifth Johnston coach to be named Coach of the Year by their respective athletic associations in the 2022-23 school year.
Last month, the Johnston Board of Education recognized four head coaches named Coaches of the Year in fall 2022 who have also taken their teams to top finishes statewide — Matt Jaschen with boys cross country, Darin Robertson with girls swimming, Patrick Hennes with girls cross country and Carson Hattel with boys golf. Congratulations and thank you, coaches!
