Deep Breathing and Deep Learning at Lawson
For Lawson physical education teacher Steve Daugherty, finding meaningful ways to infuse PE curriculum with lessons on Black History Month caused him to pause … and soon he realized a pause would be a powerful way for young students to learn about some of the most influential African-Americans in our country’s history.
Lawson kindergarten and first-grade students are getting their weekly dose of stretching, deep breathing, and focus through yoga. But now, instead of listening to music or voiced instruction, students are holding poses and with each pose is a narrative about a prominent black woman or man, such as Ruby Bridges, Jackie Robinson, and more.
Daugherty said the idea of a quiet practice such a yoga, while learning, is a great combination for kids of all ages.
