JHS’s “Beauty & the Beast” to Perform at IHS Musical Theater Awards
The Johnston High School theater department will participate in the 2018 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase, presented by EMC Insurance Companies, in honor of the school’s achievements for its April production of Beauty and the Beast.
Produced by Des Moines Performing Arts as the culmination of a year-long education initiative, the Showcase will be held at the Des Moines Civic Center on Monday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m. and will recognize a total of 68 schools from across the entire state.
The ensemble of Beauty and the Beast will perform an excerpt from their production at the Showcase, in celebration of the school’s receipt of an Outstanding Musical Production Award – the program’s highest honor.
Select students will represent Johnston High School by performing in a collaborative inter-school medley led by guest Broadway music director, Adam Jones, and choreographer, Sara Brians.
Megan Gilbreath and Cole Rixner will also audition for the opportunity to represent Iowa at the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City this summer as part of the Triple Threat Award program.
Johnston High School will be recognized with the following awards and honors:
- Outstanding Musical Production
- Outstanding Ensemble
- Outstanding Student Orchestra
- Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role- Megan Gilbreath as “Mrs Potts”
- Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role- Cole Rixner as “Gaston”
- Special Recognition for Community Support
Tickets to the Showcase, which start at $15, will go on sale on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 9 AM at DMPA.org, the Civic Center Ticket Office, and by phone at 515-246-2300.
For the first time, the Showcase will be live-streamed at Iptv.org as part of an exciting collaboration with Iowa Public Television. IPTV will air a highlights special of the evening later this summer.
