February 19 Commendations
Hear Our Dragons ROAR!
Many of our student athletic/activity organizations are kicking their competitive spirits into high gear as seasons come to a close. Congratulations to all of our students in Dragon Nation on jobs well done over the weekend! If you have group or individual commendations, please send them to Laura Sprague, JCSD Director of Communications. The following commendations and photos were submitted by parents and/or coaches.
Johnston Math Club
Johnston hosted its first math competition on Saturday, February 17th, 2018. Eleven schools competed and Johnston earned 3rd place overall! The team members were Marianne Aldrich, Hannah DeBruin, Matthew Ding, Haley Dostalik, Siama Lal, Katie Michalski, Elvin Niu, Aditya Somisetty, and Chris Yao. Chris Yao tied for first place in Target Round and received third place in the Sprint Round. The math club is coached by Julie Probst.
Dragon Wrestling
The Dragon Wrestling team wrapped up their season at the state tournament last week. The team placed 5th overall in team duals and had a total of 10 wrestlers compete individually.
Seven wrestlers placed at state: Caleb Helgeson (8th), Cade Moss (8th), Rheiner Stahlbaum (7th), Thomas Edwards(6th), Collin Hushagan (4th), Jake Ryan (4th) and Zach Price (3rd). That’s a school record!
Special shout outs to senior Zach Price who made JHS history this weekend by becoming the school’s first four-time state wrestling tournament place winner. Zach was a three-time semi-finalist earning three 3rd place finishes and a 4th place finish.
Senior Collin Hushagen now holds the most pins in one season at 32, breaking the old record of 28 by Joe Scalan!
Girls Basketball
Johnston girls basketball players Maya McDermott and Jennah Johnson have been named to the first team all CIML Iowa Conference; Regan Nesheim and Maddie Mock were voted second team all CIML Iowa Conference; Macy Thompson is a CIML Iowa Conference honorable mention. Johnson also earned both Iowa Girls Coaches Association and Iowa Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State honors. Congratulations!
Jazz Band
Congratulations to the Johnston High School Jazz Band who received first place at the Indianola Jazz Show Encounter over the weekend.
Johnston Show Choirs
At the Lake Waconia Star Power Show Choir Invitational, JHS Innovation received 1st runner up and best vocals; Best Male Soloist (Isaac Clark) ;Best Female Soloist (Amanda McGowan). JHS Synergy received 1st place in the prep division and best crew.
At the Indianola Show Choir Encounter, JMS Sound Advice won the prep category; Bria Cox earned best female vocalist. Impact earned 2nd place in the middle school division.
