Back to School 101: Dates, times, and other info
The start of the 2017-18 school year is rapidly approaching! Grades kindergarten through seven start on 
Thursday, August 24 and grades eight through twelve start on Friday, August 25.
Below are the dates and times for various back-to-school and orientation activities at each building. When in doubt, please call your child’s school for confirmation. A complete listing of all school and district events can be found on the online calendar, which people can subscribe to.

Kindergarten Jump Start: August 9 and 10
All elementary schools will hold a two-day kindergarten jump start on Wednesday, August 9 and Thursday, August 10 from 9 to 11 a.m. Parents and their incoming kindergartners should go to the school they will attend this fall.
JHS Dragon Days (grades 10-12): August 17 and 18
Incoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors, along with their parents, are encouraged to attend JHS Dragon Days on August 17 and 18. During Dragon Days, students will be able to have their school picture taken, explore the building and find classrooms, drop off medications (Thursday only), pay fees and pick up parking tags, receive SDQ and student wellness information, pick up a student ID card (needed for lunch on the first day of school), and make schedule changes as needed. High School office staff ask families to adhere to the following schedule:
- Seniors: August 17, 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Juniors: August 17, 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sophomores: August 18, 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Anyone: August 18, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Johnston Middle School (grades 8-9): August 18, 21, 22
JMS will hold new family meetings on August 18, 21, and 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. all day. There will be an Open House on August 22 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Summit Middle School (grades 6-7): August 22
Summit will hold all of their orientation/back-to-school events on August 22. A new student orientation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. A seventh grade open house will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. and a sixth grade open house will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
All Elementary Schools (grades K-5) – Beaver Creek, Horizon, Lawson, Timber Ridge, and Wallace: August 22
All elementary schools will follow the same back-to-school event schedule. New family orientation will take place on August 22 from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Meet the Teacher will be held the same day (Aug. 22) from 3-4:30 p.m.
Preschool (ages 3 and 4): August 30
Meet the Teacher will take place on August 30 from 3 to 4 p.m. Preschool for 4-year-olds will have their first day on August 31; 3- and 2-year-old preschool will start on September 5.
