The Teams:  JCSD Classroom to Boardroom strategic planning process

2

Cabinet: Our 5-member Cabinet led by Superintendent Dr. Nikki Roorda will make initial contact with Teamworks and will kick off the yearlong Strategic Planning Process.

Strategic Planning Team: This leadership group of about 25 JCSD administrators and staff will oversee and lead the district through the strategic planning process throughout the year, culminating with the 3-year operational plan being brought to the school board for review and approval.

Community Members and Staff: Up to 60 people representing periods of our past and present since 1984 will attend two, 3-hour meetings to develop a “storywall” looking at the Johnston Community School District’s past.

Department Leaders/Staff will meet for one 6-hour meeting to identify the district’s strengths and needs. This diverse group will include principals, associate or assistant principals, representatives from every school, nutrition, buildings and grounds, technology, teaching and learning, finance, transportation and others not represented on the planning team.

Focus Groups: A key part of the process is hearing from students, staff, and families regarding their Desired Daily Experiences. To begin this process, we are holding focus group meetings with each of the stakeholder groups below to better understand what experiences they want to have as they engage on a daily basis with their students, families, staff, administrators and greater school community.

      • Student Representatives will include about 25 secondary students per building (Summit, JMS and JHS).
      • Family Representatives will include a range of grade levels and demographic profiles, with students involved in different pathways and different levels of activities, and special education.
      • Staff Representatives will include teachers representing different grade levels, varying levels of academics, special education, coaches and advisers, different demographics, support staff and department staff members across the district.

School Board: In this Classroom to Boardroom process, the school board will be briefed at the beginning of the process and will then receive a draft of the 3-year operational plan at the end, once all stakeholders have had a chance to provide feedback and map a plan for the future. They will review, hold a work session or receive a report, then vote to approve the plan in an Action item at a regular board meeting.
