Support Beyond the School System

As part of the JCSD Strategic Plan Equity Focus area, one of our action steps is to “Foster a culture of advocacy and inclusivity that leads to greater care and support across the community.” To do that, we must provide resources and education to help all understand where we can grow as a school community.

English for Speakers of Other Languages

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program provides English Language Learners (EL) with an opportunity to acquire proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English. The ESOL Program promotes a positive learning environment in which each student’s first language, culture, and ethnic heritage is valued. The ESOL teachers work with students whose first language is a language other than English and who qualify for ESOL services through a testing and referral process. There are specific strategies, methodologies, and curriculum used to help students acquire English.

Black History Month

February marks Black History Month across the nation. Here in Johnston, we strive to offer enriching, age-appropriate learning experiences for students in all grades, PreK-12. As we continue to incorporate socially diverse teaching resources into our curricula, we want to make sure we offer learning about equity in authentic ways across the entire school year, not just as a stand-alone month or handful of lessons.

During the month of February, elementary classroom teachers, elementary Related Arts teachers, and secondary educators presented a variety of learning experiences related to Black History Month. Reading support, ESOL, ELP, and special education teachers are also encouraged to incorporate learning experiences when possible.

Parents and community members can reach out to their child’s school for recommended, age-appropriate reading and viewing lists for kids.
