The Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) are the assessments developed by Iowa Testing Programs at the University of Iowa for the state of Iowa. The ISASP has replaced the Iowa Assessments (or Iowa Basic Skills), as Iowa’s main state accountability test for all students.
ISASP is aligned with the Iowa Core standards, providing a clear and accurate assessment of student learning outcomes. Student growth, proficiency and readiness indicators will be reported. The tests are administered each spring in the following subjects and grade levels:
- Math: Grades 3–11
- English Language Arts, including reading and writing: Grades 3–11
- Science: Grades 5, 8, and 10.

Schedule
The Johnston Community Schools assessment window is April 1 – 21, 2025. This time frame encompasses make-up assessments.
Personal Devices
Personal devices, including cell phones, smart watches, and all other electronic devices, should not be in student possession at any time before, during, or after the test unless specified by a 504 or IEP. It is recommended that cell phones be kept at home the day of testing. All secondary buildings have processes in place and will be communicated with parents, guardians, and students. Students will be reminded of these expectations several times before testing begins.
Secondary Building Processes
- Summit Middle School—Per normal policy, backpacks, phones, and all other devices will be stored in lockers. Students who are in possession of a device when entering the room will forfeit the device to the proctor and an administrator will be notified.
- Johnston Middle School—Students are asked to keep their electronic devices turned off, put in a locker or backpack and not accessed during the entire testing session. If a student violates this policy, their score will be in jeopardy, and the device will be given to the office where a parent will be asked to pick it up at a later time. The device will not be given back to the student without a conversation with the parent or administrator.
- Johnston High School—Cell phones, smart watches, and all other electronic devices should be turned off and put in a backpack/bag, and brought to the front of the classroom. Administration will be contacted if issues should arise.
Expectations
We expect all students to follow teacher directions and guidelines for testing and be respectful of themselves and others before, during, and after testing. The JCSD Student Honor Code will also be shared with students before the beginning of their testing window.
Students that complete the testing early must stay quiet until testing time is over. They will be allowed to read a book or magazine.
Preparing Your Student
As with all assessment, parents should encourage their students to:
- Relax. There is no way students can study for this test, or know all of the answers.
- Get a good night sleep. Going to bed a little earlier than normal will make sure that you are well rested for the next day.
- Eat a healthy breakfast. Food is energy.
- Come fully prepared to engage and participate to the best of their ability.
- Avoid Absences. In order for JCSD to have accurate results, it is important that all students enrolled at JCSD participate in the ISASP testing. If your student has to be absent, we will schedule a time for them to make-up the assessment as soon as possible.
